Seasonal Affective Disorder – SAD

Seasonal Affective Disorder – SAD

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Prevention. The best way to beat Seasonal Affective Disorder.

It’s multifactorial. (Isn’t it always) But do you or your loved ones struggle with seasonal affective disorder? No shame! It’s real!

Many people suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and can have a wide array of symptoms.  Some people experience decreased energy, trouble sleeping, loss of interest in activities, difficulty concentration, depression, anxiety, low libido, low appetite, weight gain or weight loss often in correlation to an increase in carbohydrate or sugar cravings.

Did you know that these symptoms can arise as early as September, the epicenter of onset at the peak of winter months.

There are many routes to explore to prevent those winter blues.

Yes; we live in the pacific northwest. Yes; we just had greater than 50 days of no rain over the summer. But ever wonder how much vitamin D we actually absorb from the sun?  It’s not much!  Under picture-perfect conditions, the human body is able to produce as much as 10,000 IU to 20,000 IU of vitamin D3 in just 30 minutes; however we very seldom encounter those perfect conditions.

Vitamin D deficiencies are rising among all age groups in the U.S. It’s estimated as many as half of all children, teens and young adults are vitamin D deficient, as are as many as 25 to 57 percent of American adults.

What are some other reasons for SAD?

It’s so important not only to get your vitamin D levels checked, but other vitamin levels are also very important for the production and the maintenance of our neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine! Chronic inflammation, food allergies, decreased sleep and stress can all increase our likelihood of developing SAD!

So many things to explore, lets start digging and prepare for the months ahead.  Its about prevention and optimization, you deserve the best.
