Coronary Artery Calcium Score Imaging Tests

Coronary Artery Calcium Score Imaging Tests

$75 at OHSU Cardiovascular Institute

The OHSU Knight Cardiovascular Institute offers the heart scan, known as the coronary artery calcium score (CACS) at an affordable price. CACS is a painless, noninvasive test that is used to determine arterial calcium buildup, an indicator of a patient’s risk for future heart attack. The test is useful in patients presenting with one or more risk factors but who do not yet have symptoms.

A patient with a coronary calcium score of zero is at low risk for future heart attack and may be able to focus on therapeutic lifestyle changes. On the other hand a patient with a score over 100 or age/gender percentile >75th percentile may require more than just lifestyle changes, including additional medical oversight to maintain lipid goals and manage other risk factors, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Current or former smoker
  • Family history of heart disease
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Hypercholesterolemia
  • Low HDL cholesterol
  • Elevated triglycerides
  • Hypertension
  • Obesity

The results from CACS can help to inform treatment decisions, from lifestyle changes to medical management.
